Updated: Mar 28

Get ready to mark your calendars! The Umtiza Arts Festival is back for its ninth year, promising an extraordinary celebration of creativity and cultural connection in the Buffalo City Metro area. Founded by the Guild Theatre, the East London Museum, and the Ann Bryant Art Gallery, this festival has blossomed into a dynamic platform showcasing local and national talent. As the festival prepares for its 2025 edition, let’s explore what makes this event a must-attend.

A Journey through the Arts

Each year, the Umtiza Arts Festival provides artists with a unique stage to display their talents. The festival encompasses various art forms—from music and theater to visual arts—making it a vibrant blend of creativity. In 2024, the festival saw participation from over 150 artists. More than 60 performances attracted nearly 10,000 attendees, highlighting the festival's significant impact. It's an event that inspires both artists and audiences alike.

The festivities will run from May 22 to June 7, 2025. Performances will take place at the Guild Theatre, with talks and exhibitions at the East London Museum. The Ann Bryant Art Gallery will also host a series of captivating exhibitions that promise to leave a lasting impression.

Workshops and Pre-Festival Excitement

Before the main event kicks off, the Ann Bryant Art Gallery will hold engaging workshops aimed at nurturing artists of all skill levels. These sessions include figure drawing and still-life techniques, catering to both seasoned professionals and aspiring artists.

Celebrating Past and Present Talent

The Umtiza Arts Festival is not just about new talent; it also serves as a celebration of artistic legacy. This year, attendees can look forward to a curation of posthumous East London artists. This allows audiences to reconnect with beloved favorites while discovering fresh voices. This balance of established talents and emerging artists enriches the overall festival experience.

There will also be an exhibition showcasing both emerging and professional local talent. Artists must pay an entry fee of R 15.00 per artwork entered. For members of the East London Fine Art Society, the fee is R 5.00 per entry. Each artist may submit a maximum of four entries.
